Monkey Medicine (Part 1 of 2)

What can man learn about medicine by keeping an eye on monkeys? Find out on today’s Creation Moments Minute.

Folks who are in to natural remedies know that more than a quarter of our drugs come from wild plants. Traditionally, researchers in search of new drugs would ask local folk healers about plants that might be helpful. However, that isn’t always the best approach. In some societies, plants are thought to have healing powers simply because they look like a disease.

Researchers are now learning to follow animals around. Monkeys have led medical researchers to several new medicines. Chimps in Tanzania, for instance, were seen swallowing the unchewed leaves of a tree. Studies of the leaves and the droppings showed that the leaves were not digested. However, the chimps’ digestive system had removed chemicals from the surface of the leaves that kill intestinal parasites.

More about monkey medicine on our next program.

Genesis 44:1-34

And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man's money in his sack's mouth. 2 And put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack's mouth of the youngest, and his corn money. And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken. 3 As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses. 4 And when they were gone out of the city, and not yet far off, Joseph said unto his steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good? 5 Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing. 6 And he overtook them, and he spake unto them these same words. 7 And they said unto him, Wherefore saith my lord these words? God forbid that thy servants should do according to this thing: 8 Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks' mouths, we brought again unto thee out of the land of Canaan: how then should we steal out of thy lord's house silver or gold?

In Lesson 2 Closing, it wasn’t wise for Carter to take off for the chapel blindfolded. Eventually, Jeff figures out a way to get them both there.

In Lesson 2 Opening, Carter is sure he knows how to get to the chapel. However, he seems even more determined to find it once he's blindfolded and fails to rely on the wisdom Jeff can provide.

In Lesson 1 Closing, Jeff’s plan to impress Will didn’t work out so well! Sometimes, we’re like Jeff. We’re afraid, and we want to be more impressive. But at camp, Jeff discovers that God loves us no matter what. He promises to be with us and to give us courage to serve others in His name.

In Lesson 1 Opening, Jeff is afraid that he won’t impress Will, his new camp counselor. However, at Camp Discovery, campers will meet another young man named David who didn’t impress anyone when he showed up at Israel’s army camp. But David wasn’t afraid, because God gave him courage, just as Jesus gives us courage.

In Lesson 4 Closing, Will’s skill as a wilderness guide helps Carter trust Will and enjoy the forest! But the faith Jesus gives is a much bigger deal than that!

In Lesson 4 Opening, campers learn that Carter is afraid of snakes. Can he learn to trust Will, who's certified as the camp wilderness instructor?
