Jesus came to the Jordan to fulfill all righteousness, to find out who he was, and to take away OUR sins. This event was God's way of telling the world who Jesus was and his purpose for being on earth. Most Christians are concerned that is is our failures that will define who we were during our earthly lives. But through baptism, God is telling us that we have been saved and all our failures have been forgiven in Jesus' name.
Part 3 of a 4 part series on Christian Liberty, delivered by me in March of 1990. I find it constantly amazing that statements made in 1990 are so fresh for today. However, the nature of man doesn't change nor does God or His remedy for man's sinful nature.
1 Introduction 2 Is it a sin to eat unclean meat? 3 clean and unclean for the Jew only? 4 What goes in does not defile a man
Everyone always wants to get healthier right? I have a close friend who had a weight problem, digestive problems, and bowel problems. When he accepted the truth of this simple Biblical diet (which is not a diet as we would think of a diet for losing weight), his digestive issues are gone, his bowels are back to normal, he lost over 11 pounds quickly, and he says he feels better all around.
First an earthquake, then a bomb, finally the military. When this happens? I do not know. Jeremiah 1:1-3 gives a timeline. Jer. 1:11-12 says God is ready to perform his word. His word was pronounced in 2 Kings 21 during the reign of Manasseh. This means it took well over 40 years for God to do what he said he would do.
Jeremiah 3:6-11 hints at Judah's approach to God. Jesus spoke of Isreal in the same way in Matthew 15:7-9. The present day church is the same way. We miss what God desires of his people which is to obey his commands. Instead idols have been brought into the house polluting our worship. This is repeated throughout Jeremiah. Jer. 7:17-18, 21-24, 30 Jer. 9:12-14 Jer. 11:7-8, 10-11 Jer. 22:8-8 Many believe that their sacrifice is acceptable. I Samuel 15:22 says otherwise. If the church were stripped down to just the word and the commandments, what would be left out? Think about all of the holidays, celebrations, and rationalizations used to justify "ministry". Calamity will come. For those who are seeking God and earnestly following his word there is hope for safety.

The apostle Paul says that Jesus was born when the fullness of time had come (Gal.4:4). He means that Jesus showed up at just the right time, just when we needed him most. So many people fall into the trap of a life that leaves no time for God. Jesus was sent to rescue us from that trap. As we celebrate his birth our attention is called away from our “to-do” lists to the good news of what God has done on our behalf. His works are the only works that can give us any lasting peace or rest. So my prayer for you this Christmas is that your times may be filled, not with things that need doing, but with the confidence that God knows exactly what you need. And through Jesus He will provide it to you at just the right time. Have a blessed and merry Christmas!
John 21- In this bone crunching episode of the boneyard, we bring our series of John to an end! Jesus sits with Peter after eating breakfast, and Jesus asks a question to Peter. 'Do you Love Me?' Peter had recently denied Jesus, now he sits across from the Son of God who he had told others he didn't know the man. Now how will this all turn out? Tune in and see how Jesus deals with those who have failed, and those with the weakest faith!
Hearing the Christmas story told year after year, some of the messier details of that story can begin to lose their edginess and start to sound quaint and predictable (which is a funny thing to say about a miracle). But the situation described by Matthew is anything but quaint: an unwed mother, an unplanned pregnancy, the prospect of divorce. Sounds more like the sad and messy reality of our modern lives than anything God would have planned. But this is how He wanted it to be. God might have sent His Son into the world under circumstances that were more noble, or at least not so messy. But this was the storyline He chose. And in doing so, God showed us His preference for using those who are weak and confused to accomplish His will. In this way, God’s power and grace shine even brighter. Can God work through you? Remember, you don’t have to have your life completely together or have everything figured out before God can use you. If the Christmas story is any clue, He does His best work when things are messy. Have a blessed Christmas!
